Icon Clock

A sweet little Chrome extension.
The cleanest toolbar clock you’ll find anywhere!

A tidy clock for your browser toolbar

Icon Clock is a really tidy clock for your browser toolbar. It offers good readability, and good customization.

Follows your system’s theme

You can optionally configure Icon Clock to follow your system’s dark/light theming, so you don’t have to change the clock font color manually.

Pick your style

Choose from a few fonts to make the clock you like best, from straightforward sans-serif to blocky sci-fi, there is a number style for you.

Watch another time zone

Out of the box it’s a simple system-time clock. But maybe you’d like to use it instead to keep track of time where a friend or college lives or works? Just flip a switch!

Other than watching for your click on the icon, and saving your preferences, Icon Clock doesn’t need invasive permissions. It doesn’t track the pages you visit, or anything you do, or share anything with anyone else. Here is our privacy policy for extensions.

Now with a nice zen analog clock face, for when you just need a low-key glanceable “about four” update, and a handy timezone reminder, with time and date clarification, in the action icon’s hover tooltip.

Icon Clock is a clean, focused digital clock right in the extension icon. System theme following, lockable to a different time zone, cool font choices, and now analog face option! What more could you ask for?

Working in Chrome in full-screen mode is great, but then on both Windows and Mac, the system clock is hidden. Icon Clock lets you place an easy to read time right in Chrome’s top toolbar.

  1. After installation, pin the extension icon using the puzzle-piece icon in the address bar.
  2. Drag Icon Clock to where you like it in the toolbar.
  3. Click on the icon to open preferences.
  4. If you want the face to automatically reverse contrast when your system changes to dark theme, select “follow system theme.”
  5. If you use custom colors inside chrome, you can force dark mode on it its’ better for your theme. Also try adding a contrasting background behind the numbers.
  6. If you want to track time in another part of the world, you can set the clock to any zone you like. By default it follows whatever your system is using.
  7. Don’t like AM/PM time? Use the 24 hr time option.
  8. Don’t need up to the minute? For a low-key glanceable “about four” update, try the analog face. Soothing and zen.

This extension does not ask for unnecessary permissions. It doesn’t need access to the pages you visit, it doesn’t track or save your browsing or actions. You can right click on the extension icon in your toolbar, to see exactly what information it can read from your browser. For more details, read our detailed terms of use and privacy policy.

This extension requests the User Activity permission, which Google says can mean “For example: network monitoring, clicks, mouse position, scroll, or keystroke logging”. Sounds scary, but actually Badge Clock just needs to know: a) when you clicked the extension icon, so it can open the settings popup; b) when you select options, so it can save them; c) when you click the shortcut key, so it can launch the extension.

  2. Imagine is a fixed font by Jens Isensee. Designed for a video game. But it’s also cool for a clock! Worth the licensing fee.
  3. Georama is a variable width and weight font by Production Type, also free for commercial use from Google Fonts.
  • This system generates a new extension icon each minute.
  • Getting time is pretty easy, and converting time zones is pretty easy.
  • However, security strategies in chromium-based browsers make it quite difficult to generate the dynamic images.
  • A combination of cooperating document types is needed to gather the various permissions to do everything: get custom fonts, use them in Canvas 2D API to make an image of the current time, convert it to a format that can be passed as a message to another document, convert it back to an image, and finally update the extension’s icon, over and over.
  • Also, there are a lot of bad font converters out there. These two work though: I used OTF to WOFF2 and TTF to WOFF2

  • 1.1.0: Swapped out one font due to licensing restrictions, and one font for performance reasons. Also removed font previews from the popup, it just slowed everything down too much.
  • 1.0.1: Fixes three small bugs: sometimes user prefs are not saving correctly; sometimes force dark mode and follow system dark are not mutually exclusive; sometimes the time is out of date for a minute on system wake from sleep.
  • 1.0.0: Adds a timezone reminder, with time and date clarification, in the action icon’s hover tooltip. Calling this feature complete.
  • 0.0.5: Minor fix: broken image path for one of the popup example images.
  • 0.0.3: Added an analog clock face option. Corrected FAQ and privacy notifications to reflect that this extension does no tracking of any kind, ever.
  • 0.0.2: initial public release includes 24hr time or AM/PM, auto follow of system dark mode, three cool fonts, manual time zone override.
  • Upcoming: on-page clock overlay
It might be nice to have an analog or digital clock overlaid on every page. Also, it could provide back-to-top and reading progress functionality too, just like our Top Rocket extension.
  • July ’24: analog clock face option
Adds a cute little analog clock face, for those of you zen enough to be OK with +/- 1hr glanceable.
  • June ’24: Initial public release
Includes 24hr time or AM/PM, auto follow of system dark mode, three cool fonts, and a manual time zone override.
